Omniflow is transforming urban lighting with intelligent luminaires that integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning on the spot. These luminaires illuminate the streets and promote sustainability by generating energy through wind turbines and solar panels, reducing electricity costs and CO2 emissions by more than 90 per cent.

Coimbra aims to minimise the environmental impact of its public transport network. The city is committed to electrification to achieve this goal and plans to incorporate hydrogen-powered buses into the Coimbra Municipal Urban Transport Services (SMTUC) fleet.

Évora will be a pioneering town in Portugal by adopting an all-electric public transport network. This project will be possible thanks to the commitment of the concessionaire Trevo to purchase buses with the support of national and international programmes focused on decarbonisation, which will allow for an all-electric fleet.

In 2023, the mobility sharing system in the municipality of Oeiras recorded 144,000 journeys, preventing the emission of 60 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Galp exceeded expectations and achieved a record for electric charging in 2023, surpassing the mark of one million charges at its network of petrol stations. EMEL, the company responsible for the GIRA bicycle service in Lisbon, recently inaugurated six new stations, bringing the total number to 146 stations and 2,873 parking docks, an expansion that aims to improve the operation of the service in the city of Lisbon, providing greater convenience to users.

The municipality of Oeiras and the Megellan 500 consortium signed a protocol to implement an Air Electric Mobility project in the metropolis. This project is intended for passenger transport and involves the installation of vertiports for aircraft bases and VTTOL-electric vehicles with vertical take-off. It is estimated that the system will be in operation within six years.

In Albergaria-a-Velha, in the district of Aveiro, the MOB.A - Mobilidade Operação Bicicleta project was implemented, which provides bicycles for free public use. The programme has three main objectives: to foster a culture of sustainable travel in the city, reduce the use of motorised vehicles, and encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.

"Salicórnia" is the first electric ferry developed entirely in Portugal by Portuguese companies to serve a Portuguese region. It is also the first electric ferry on the Iberian Peninsula. The vessel, which links São Jacinto to Forte da Barra (Aveiro), has zero CO2 emissions, eliminating more than 300 tonnes of CO2 released by the previous model in operation and reducing energy consumption by around 30%.

EDP Ventures, through British startup Mixergy, invested 1.7 million euros in developing an innovative technology that, using advanced Artificial Intelligence techniques, provides significant savings in water heating, efficiently using solar energy and optimising the management of available resources. With this technology, the water heating time is five times faster.

Joper, an agricultural and industrial equipment company, started its decarbonisation process by installing a photovoltaic power plant.

In Seixal, the municipality is investing in a municipal public lighting plan to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, which includes the replacement of more than 6,000 lamps and the identification of faults in lamp posts throughout the municipality.

In Pinhal Novo, the first photovoltaic park in Portugal was inaugurated as part of Voltalia's Garrido Complex, composed of five solar plants. With an investment of 11 million euros, the park has an installed capacity of 11.8 MW and around 22,000 solar panels. 

The Nova University of Lisbon has launched NOVA cidade, a network of people and organizations led by NOVA IMS - Information Management School to develop activities that promote knowledge creation in the context of urban intelligence. 

Oeiras City Hall wants to increase the use of public transport by 36% and soft mobility by 25%, which will allow a reduction in the use of individual vehicles by 40%. The goal is to reduce 20% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the municipality. Implementing the strategy will involve the creation of innovative projects capable of bringing more efficiency to the city's transportation system.

Monitoring cities with a view to sustainability is setting the profile of urban environments to respond more effectively to people's needs and improve their quality of life. In this sense, the Lisbon Municipality, together with the consultancy Beta-i, promoted the Smart Open Lisbon Energy Transition intending to reduce carbon emissions in the city and improve the experience of its citizens. Six projects reached the end of the programme and are already being applied in a real context.

The Municipality of Barreiro is developing a pilot project to manage waste deposits regarding access, blockages, disposal statistics and cross-referencing information with volume sensors. This is possible thanks to containers incorporated in the access controls. This solution aims to create a governance model that promotes sustainability and efficiency in contemporary cities.

Cascais Ambiente is responsible for managing public spaces to ensure the preservation of the environment, biodiversity and the fight against climate change. The 100% electric truck is one of its most recent projects and aims to contribute to a more sustainable urban waste collection.

The Municipality of Guimarães has developed and implemented strategies supported by cutting-edge technologies to improve the inhabitants' quality of life. From water retention basins to prevent flooding to the gymnasium with an efficient and innovative energy supply system, Guimarães advances in the construction of a more SMART and sustainable future for the next generations.

The municipal program B-smart Famalicão aims to create a greener city, more inclusive, innovative and with more modern public management, promoting diversity, equal opportunities, and more active participation of citizens.

Portugal, through AICEP, marked presence at the Next Web Conference'2023 to present its technological competencies. The event took place in June in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, bringing together 10 000 participants from 120 countries.

Portugal was present, for the first time with a stand, at the Smart Cities Expo World Congress (SCEWC), which took place in November 2022 in Barcelona, Spain.
