Portugal at the Smart Cities Expo World Congress

Portugal was present, for the first time with a stand, at the Smart Cities Expo World Congress (SCEWC), which took place in November 2022 in Barcelona, Spain. The Portuguese participation was organised by NOVA Cidade - Urban Analytics Lab of NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS) of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL) with the support of AICEP – Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency and the Consulate General of Portugal in Barcelona.

This initiative enabled Portugal to participate, for the first time, with an entire stand in this international event held annually in that Spanish city. In this stand, Portuguese municipalities and companies could show and share good practices and success stories of urban intelligence projects and solutions implemented in Portugal.

In the "SMART Portugal" space, the Portuguese representation brought together around 50 participants, including representatives of the Braga, Famalicão, Guimarães, Lisbon and Porto municipalities, as well as the Intermunicipal Communities of Oeste and Viseu Dão Lafões. Also present were the companies Altice, AV Pro, CEiiA, Focus BC and Wavecom, and NOVA Information Management School of UNL, represented by NOVA Cidade - Urban Analytics Lab.

The Portuguese stand had 230 square meters. In addition to the spaces dedicated to each exhibitor, it also had a common place where participants could make short multimedia presentations and pitches about their initiatives and projects.

This year, the event returns to Barcelona between 7 and 9 November and, once again, will discuss the intersection between technology and cities and the opportunity for a more sustainable and equitable world where new business and collaboration models are emerging.

The Smart Cities Expo World Congress is recognised as one of the most important international events in the smart cities sector. It brings together hundreds of experts, policymakers and representatives of companies and organisations committed to improving their cities. Initially hosted in Barcelona, the event has been expanded since 2013 to other cities worldwide, adapting each edition to the specific needs and interests of the regions hosting it.
