Coimbra bets on hydrogen transport and more pedestrian zones
Committed to minimising the environmental impact of its public transport network, Coimbra is currently following the path of electrification and exploring innovative solutions. To this end, the municipality is introducing hydrogen-powered buses into the Coimbra Municipal Urban Transport Service (SMTUC) fleet.
In addition, the city is implementing the BRT (bus rapid transit) system, an electric bus service that will run on dedicated lanes. This urban network will connect Coimbra, Miranda do Corvo and Lousã, offering an efficient and sustainable transport option between these municipalities.
Coimbra City Council will also build a central station to restructure mobility in the city. Several measures will also be implemented to make the city greener, such as pedestrianising some of the city's roads and intensifying the fight against illegal parking.
